30 miles south of Astoria is the incredible beach of Cannon Beach. The beach is about three miles long and loaded with rock stacks in the water. It's pretty easy to spend a day here and just walk up and down the beach to take in the changing vista. It's particularly pretty at sunset.
After leaving Cannon Beach, I drove the coast going south toward Newport. The whole drive is an incredible scene of big cliffs, rocky shores and a few sandy beaches. It would be easy to spend a week doing this drive, exploring every state park along the way.
One of my main goals was to see the aquarium at Newport. It's divided into three areas - the reef building, the deep sea building, and the otter/sealion tanks. It's a load of fun and I spent three hours there.
After leaving Newport, I continued south to Reedsport, then back north to Tillamook. I was revisiting most of the coast, and I shot a few more pictures.
Portland Travels 2004
In September I thought I'd ride my bike down the Oregon coast. After six flat tires in the first two days, I put the bike back in the car and drove the rest of the way down.
