Get on the Historic River Highway near Troutdale then follow the winding road through the wet forest until it comes to Crown Point. Vista House sits on the edge of the promentory with a commanding view of the river for miles upstream and downstream.

Continue past Crown Point and in a few miles is the big parking area for Latrelle Falls. This is perhaps the prettiest waterfall in the gorge. Hike down the trail for about a quarter mile through the wet, green choked valley and you come to the falls, about a hundred feet high and falling off an overhanging cliff.

A little farther down the road is Multnomah Falls. This is one of the biggest attractions in the state and even has its own exit on Interstate 84. And it's popular for a good reason, the upper falls is 550 feet high, making it the tallest in this region. It's a quick hike to the bridge above the lower falls, which has great views of the upper falls and lower observation deck.

Farther down the road are several more falls, some right on the road. The most interesting of them is Oneota, which is described on its own page. Just out of the gorge is the fish hachery at Bonnevile. Its star attraction is the giant sturgeon with a big viewing window on the side of the pond.

Portland Travels 2005       In May of this year, I took another tour of the Columbia River Gorge with my nephew. There's plenty to see in the Gorge and is always worth yet another trip.
