Though is doesn't look that long (50 miles), this is an all day trip because of the constantly twisting road and the urge to take pictures at every bend. At first the terrain is gentle and the road easy, but then after about half way the terrain starts getting mountainous, the road twisty and the forest bigger and wetter. There are very few beaches along the north shore (too much surf, too little sand), but there's plenty of waterfalls and ponds.
Maui Hawaii Travels 2002
The road around the northeast coast to Hana is billed as the most spectacular drive in the world. This rugged coast is drippy wet with thick rain forest and waterfalls above pounding surf.
