Pikes Peak Trail Guide

Steepest Rides
If you're looking for a torture test of leg strength or a death wish slolom ride, this group of rides will push even experts to their limits. Bring a stretcher and a spare bike if you want to make it out alive.

Cheyenne Canyon Road
This is probably the steepest paved road in Colorado. Even though this beautiful climb is only 2 miles, it seems to never end as it gains 1000 feet by the time you get to Helen Hunt Falls. ( 1000 feet in 2 miles, paved )

Palmer Lake Upper Reservoir
This smooth jeep road looks simple enough on a map, but most riders I've seen on it were pushing their bikes. It's rideable if you've got good legs, lungs and stamina, but plan on a few rest stops. ( 500 feet in 1.5 miles )

Seven Lakes Access Road
This slog is not only steep but it's above 10,000 feet to boot. It's a beautiful ride on a decient jeep road, but even experts will need several rest stops on the way up. ( 1200 feet in 3 miles )

Hackett Gulch Jeep Road
This nightmare is the steepest jeep road in the Pike Forest. After a white-knuckle drop to the Platte River, I turned to find this jaw-dropper between me and my car. Climbing 1000 feet in the first mile, I was leaning against a tree every 100 yards for the next hour. ( 1000 feet in 1 mile, 3 miles total )

Winding Stairs Trail
The "Stairs" is a motorcycle trail that even motorcyclers won't ride. Climbing 500 feet in 1/3 mile, this loose rock hillside is not only not-rideable but is barely walkable, going up or down. After going over the handlebars, I slid most of the way down as if on skis. ( 500 feet in 1/3 mile )

Catamount Creek Trail (hike)
Though not even remotely rideable, this tough hike is actually a lot of fun. Following a churning creek straight up the mountainside, the trail climbs the rocks like a giant stairs, ending at the 'Garden of Eden' above Green Mountain Falls. ( 800 feet in 0.8 miles )
