North of town, the Balanced Rock Road connects Palmer Lake to Rampart Range Road. This fun jeep road is closed to vehicles at the bottom but open to bikes and hikers the whole way (8 miles). The long climb on a bike is a real workout (1500 feet in 5 miles) but it's a load of fun on the way back down, and mostly non-technical. The road is named after this balanced rock, which has been hidden in the trees and forgotten for the last 30 years. It's about 6 miles from the reservoir's trailhead, just south of the road. |
