A lot of streams start their journey on the slopes of Pikes Peak. And since this was once a world famous gold mining area, you'd think the streams would be loaded with gold flakes. In reality, the gold colored flakes that speckle the creeks are actually mica. But panning is still lots of fun and it's not hard to find an occasional real flake.
