Pikes Peak Trail Guide

St Peters Dome

2 Mile Trail, Out/Back 9400-9700 Elevation

This short trail is a rough climb to the top of a rock pile mountain, with impressive views toward Colorado Springs.

To get here, drive south on Old Stage Road to the junction with Gold Camp Road. Continue west on Gold Camp Road for one mile to a scenic overlook perched on a left hand bend in the road. Park the car and you'll see a sign to the west that says 'St Peters Dome'.

The trail starts out smooth and not real steep as it runs along the east side of the hill. This smooth part lasts a half mile and then the trail makes a hairpin turn to the left and it suddenly turns ugly. The trail zig zags a few times through the sudden boulder field and then disappears. The last quarter mile is no longer a trail but an all-fours climb up car sized boulders, and the direction merely 'Up'. This part is awfully dangerous and hikers shouldn't even attempt it without help and a lot of discretion.

If you don't fall, you'll turn out on top of a rather interesting rocky promontory, with the high point a hundred yard farther north. From this high point is a stunning view of Mountains to the west and the valley to the north.

After spending a little time at the top, it's time to guess your way back down and which is even worse than the trip up.
