Pikes Peak Trail Guide

Gray Back Peak

4 Mile Trail, Out/Back 8720-9348 Elevation

This quick and scenic hike climbs a gentle slope to the main peak south of Cheyenne Mountain. From the top you'll find panoramic views of the southern foothills and the plains.

To get here, drive west then south on Old Stage Road. After about six mile from the start of Old Stage, is the left turn off for Emerald Valley, a half mile before the Gold Camp Road junction. Turn left on the Emerald Valley road and climb a quarter mile to a parking spot at the high point. Hike up the trail, not down the jeep road.

This starts out kind of steep but quickly crests the ridge, where it becomes a leisurly hike across the spine of Grayback's west flank. This starts out in the typical dry forest of the region, but after a half mile it becomes surprisingly green with brush and moss. The view to the west looks straight up Emerald Valley, with Mount Vigil to its right.

Once on top you'll have a panoramic view of hilly Fort Carson and the Route 115 foothills. The mountains to the south and west are the rarely visited Beaver Creek Wilderness. These are some of the best views you'll find on such a short hike. And if four miles is too much, the Emerald Ranch horses run this trail all the time.
