The best skiing spots require fairly flat terrain, plus
high altitude and shade so the snow doesn't easily melt.
These are some of the more popular areas, but none of them
get reliable snow.
Rampart Reservoir Trail
When the snow is good this is one of the most beautiful
crosscountry ski locations in the country. Ski two or
three miles to the lake, and then you'll have the whole
place to yourself. Stick to the southside trail unless
you're an expert.
Mueller State Park
The high altitude and great network of easy trails make
this one of the best ski locations in Colorado when the
snow is good. The park is a web of short loops that can
be combined into any length trip you like. You could
spend a week here exploring.
Florissant Fossil Beds
The snow melts quickly in the open pastures of Florissant
but after a good dump this area is beautiful and the
trails are pretty easy.
Mount Baldy Road
This road is bad enough in the summer, but if you can
make it in the winter you'll find plenty of good snow.
At 11,000 feet, it snows early and stays late. Drive
or ski up a mile to the open meadow called Frosty Park,
and then start exploring.
Horsethief Park Trail
This trail starts from the tunnel south of Divide and
is a little steep but not technical. The 10,000 foot
elevation ensures good snow and the is valley pretty scenic.
Crags Trail
This beautiful valley is one of the area's most popular
skiing spots, even though the trail is way too rough
for most skiers. There's only about a mile of skiable
trail and the access road is just as fun.
