Black Forest Loop

21 Mile Paved Loop 7600 Altitude

The scenic Black Forest area is a grid of roads covering a good variety of landscapes - forest, range, plains and buttes.

Get off of I-25 at the Briargate Parkway exit, just north of Academy Blvd. Head north on Route 83 four miles to Shoup Road, turn right and drive two miles to the county park where there is a parking lot, restroom and other recreation.

Ride east on Shoup Road which is up a slight hill and through some of the heaviest forest of the area. It's two miles to Black Forest Village where you'll just go straight through and continue east. The ride along Shoup Road has the strong smell of Christmas trees. Four miles from the start is Vollmer Road, turn left and continue the ride north through thinning trees. Follow Vollmer for four miles to Hodgen and turn left.

Hodgen Road shortly runs out of the forest and crosses several miles of open range. This area has big views of the forest to the south and rocky buttes to the north. After five miles of Hodgen, turn left on Rt 83, which heads south along the forest edge and back to Shoup and the car. For a little more fun, continue west on Hodgen past Rt 83 to Roller Coaster Road. As the name implies, this fun road is a sequence of short hills.
