Pikes Peak Trail Guide

TRAIL GUIDE 2001
The Front Range On CD-ROM

Fixes and Updates

Version 2 of the trailguide (Trail Guide 2001 and Front Range Trailguide with Map Book) has two know problems :

1. On newer computers (Win XP) the install program will abort on about one in ten computers. These can be manually installed in either of these ways:
A. Run it directly from the CD. You can do that by creating a shortcut on the desktop and specifying the CD drive as the target.
B. Copy everything over from the CD to a Trails directory on your hard disk (with Windows Explorer), then create a shortcut on the desktop and specify the new location on your hard disk as the target.
Either way, erase the INI file first: in Windows Explorer click your way to C:\Windows\Trails.Ini, then delete it.

2. Some of the trail reports were missing (Florissant mostly). The button below will download an updated version of the trail reports. Click the button below and have the Download dialog copy the file to the "C:\Trails\Pike2" folder (if that's where your program is currently located). The files are a self extracting zip file and will need to be un-zipped to the same location.

Download Version 2 Updated Trail Reports

Click the link and the download will start immediately.
File Size is about 300,000 bytes and should take about 3 minutes with a 14400 modem.

For those who have the Trail Guide CD, Version 1 and would like an update of the program (but not the data), there are two options. For those with Windows 3.1, there is the Version 1.5 executable. For those with Windows 95,98,NT, there is the Version 2 executable. Click one of the buttons below and have the Download dialog copy the file to the "C:\Trails" folder (if that's where the program is currently located). The files are not zipped and should work immediately.

Download Version 1 Update for Windows 3.1 (Version 1.5 Exe)

Download Version 1 Update for Windows 95, 98, NT (Version 2 Exe)

Click the link and the download will start immediately.
Win 3.1 file size is about 400,000 bytes and should take about 4 minutes with a 14400 modem.
Win 95 file size is about 470,000 bytes and should take about 5 minutes with a 14400 modem.

For those who downloaded the Demo, copy this to the PikeDemo folder.
Listed below are the major changes since Version 1 :
Trail names are now buttons instead of text to reduce clutter.
The route is highlighted when the cursor passes over a trail button.
Printouts use better line styles and are far easier to read.
Program can now print a map to a Windows BMP file, where it can be used by another program and in publications.
Terrain shades are now in full color, but not in this update.
